January 17, 2024Happy New Year From The VMPB!
We hope your 2024 is off to a great start! The VMPB is currently starting Phase 2 of our Economic Impact Study. Phase 2 will expand upon the previous study linked here by gathering data on commercial seafood’s economic impact including restaurant and retail industries and any out of state sales. While phase one’s total economic impact number was already an impressive 1.1 billion dollars phase 2 will estimate what this figure is now and combine it with the newly collected data to give us an up-to-date total.
The VMPB is also excited for the upcoming release of the latest NOAA and VMRC landing figures. Based on the latest data released from the agencies Virginia was third in the nation and first on the east coast in seafood landed in 2021. The report attached here shows that Virginia landed 350,256,108 pounds of seafood which had a total dockside value of $222,209,720 in 2021. In 2021 Reedville was the fourth largest U.S. fishing port based on landings and the seconded wealthiest port in the nation.
