August 27, 2024Virginia Continues To Lead The East Coast In Seafood Landings!

The VMPB has currently released there 2022 Virginia Top 20 Landings Figures and Virginia continues to be third in the nation and first on the East Coast in Oyster landings. Based on data that the VMPB received from NOAA 342,497,397 pounds of seafood which valued $168,976,804.00 was landed in Virginia in 2022. Menhaden was the species with the highest dollar value at $48,880,893.59 and 307,011,958 total pounds landed. Rounding out the top ten in dollar value are Oysters, Blue Crab, Hard Clams, Sea Scallops, Summer Flounder, Striped Bass, Blue Catfish, Conch, and Spot. Also according to the VMRC Aquaculture Oyster Landings had a dollar value of $21,438,327.29 with a poundage of 2,944,225 and Aquaculture Hard Clams had a dollar value of $27,586,511.59 with a poundage of 3,147,422. The VMPB has also released the 2024 Facts About The Virginia Seafood Industry report. Based on data that the VMPB received from NOAA as of 2022 Reedville, VA is the fourth largest fishing port in the nation based on landings. According to Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services statistics, Virginia seafood exports totaled $32.17 million in 2023 to 13 countries. The top countries where Virginia seafood exported are Canada, Belgium, and France, with Belgium being a new market for Virginia Seafood.
