Virginia Oyster Recall Limited to One Growing Area

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has closed one shellfish growing area in the Little Wicomico River as part of its response to a Salmonella outbreak. A related recall covers oysters harvested by Little Wicomico Oyster Company from the Little Wicomico River or Little Wicomico River Lower between September 18 and October 8, 2026. Consumers, retailers, and restaurants should discard or return any recalled oysters, which should not be eaten, sold, or served—even if cooked.

The closure affects one part of Virginia’s extensive shellfish fishery, which includes more than 90 growing areas overseen by VDH. Oysters from other open Virginia growing areas and other dealers are not included in this recall, and shellstock tags provide a way for retailers and restaurants to confirm the source of their oysters. By reviewing the harvest area, date, and dealer information recorded on those tags, businesses can identify affected products and work with their suppliers to resolve questions about individual shipments.

Across Virginia’s other open waters, growers raising farm-raised oysters and watermen harvesting wild oysters continue supplying markets and restaurants. Their harvests bring Virginia’s coastal flavors to the table in everything from oysters on the half shell and fried oyster baskets to oyster roasts and warm bowls of stew. As the investigation continues, consumers and businesses can find the latest recall details and guidance on the

Virginia Department of Health website.
